INTRODUCTION

Climate in India generally is cooler in the north, especially between September and March. The south is coolest between November to January. In June, winds and warm surface currents begin to move northwards and westwards, heading out of the Indian Ocean and into the Arabian Gulf. This creates a phenomenon known as the south-west monsoon, and it brings heavy rains to the west coast. Between October and December, a similar climatic pattern called the north-east monsoon appears in the Bay of Bengal, bringing rains to the east coast.

Major seasons in India are summer, monsoon, autumn, winter and spring, but winter and summer are the most lengthier and eventful.

In general October to March is the most convenient as it includes autumn, winter and spring season. Autumn and spring are the most soothing among all climate.

The winter season (November to February) is pleasant throughout the country. Regions of North India remain extremely cold during winters. So it is the finest time for tourists to visit India.

Summer Season

The summer season (April to June) is hot in most parts of the country. Hill Stations like Gangtok, Pelling, Darjeeling and Kalimpong provide cool respite. But if you hail from a traditionally hot country, the heat may not bother you much and you can travel, Rajasthan, Goa and the beaches of Kerala.

The Monsoon

The Monsoon (July to September) rain sweep across the country with daily torrential downpours and a high possibility of flooding making travel difficult in all areas except the northwest. Duration of monsoons may vary in as per the regions.

Northeastern India

The best times to visit most of North eastern India, which would include Sikkim, North Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh, is between Octobers to March. Here the summer is mostly warm; giving you access to some of the most beautiful sights nature has to offer. The winters here are bitterly cold with temperatures going down to below freezing point. But during these seasons the wildlife is in the best possible form. Due to high rainfall / humidity during both the Monsoon Season, views of the lush hillside, tea plantations and wild life is special attraction. Waterproofs are must and warm layers are advisable.
